GIS Software
Geographic Information Systems are computer software programs that can provide additional functionality to GPS data.
Basic mapping systems support GPS data collection such as combine yield maps, sprayer path maps, field borders, soil sampling points, etc. The basic use of these types of programs is to record the GPS coordinates along with some type of attribute.
High-powered GIS software programs provide a platform for precision management. Many tasks can be performed with maps and the underlying data that they are built on.
How we use GIS software
CropPro uses several basic mapping systems to collect data in the field. They can be used to log files to create maps from field activities. Collecting geo-referenced NDVI data from the GreenSeeker Handheld is an example of the use with this type of configuration.
These programs are also used to map data from the truck mounted GPS receiver when applying trials when sub-meter accuracy is required. You can come back and view the trial locations at the touch of a button without searching for flags.
Soil sampling, field border maps, crop damage claims, leaf-cutter bee shelter maps and more are all facilitated by using these software programs, an iPAQ, and a backpack GPS configuration.
We have been using several high-powered GIS software programs. These programs have amazing functionality for the high-end user. We use it to import maps from every type of mapping system our clients use. Once imported, the user can surface the point data, overlay strip trials and sampling points, and develop prescription maps. The picture above is a zone map we developed for one of our clients fields.
GIS software provides a map to the future.
