Out With the Old....In With the New
May 23rd 2009
As generic products become available, weeds have adapted to many of these older chemistries. They end up having a very limited market in this area.
Group 1 and 2 based HT canola systems will have big issues in the future as the list of resistant weeds grows. A good strategy is to rotate HT canola systems that offer group 9 and 10 herbicides.
New products are coming to market with new modes of action and multiple modes of action. Sometimes these products offer good resistance management but they are not "better" than the old products. However, we often have no choice if we have weed resistance and have to find ways to make new products work for us.
Sometimes it is difficult to advise things that "nobody else is doing" because even if a farmer has not experienced the problem yet, it is important to strike first and manage the potential future issues before they become issues. It is important to strike first. If we adapt first it forces them to beat us. |
